John is one of the few trainers who help attendees after the workshop to prepare for the assessment, usually at least two 90-minute sessions or four sessions. For some courses, John prepared & tested 100 questions. Attendees have access to recordings of other groups preparing for the assessment.
Helping Leaders Understand their Role in Enabling Agile Transformation
Professional Agile Leadership™ (PAL) Essentials is a modular workshop, adaptable up to 2-days in length based on the needs of your organization. The workshop provides a foundation for the role that leaders play in creating the conditions for a successful agile transformation. Leaders and managers are critical enablers in helping their organizations be successful, yet the role of leaders and managers in an agile organization can be quite different from what they are used to. This workshop uses a combination of instruction and team-based exercises to help participants learn how to form and support agile teams to achieve better results, and how to lead the cultural and behavioural changes that organizations must make to reap the benefits of an agile product delivery approach.
Becoming an agile organization is a profound transformation that requires senior leaders, middle managers, and agile team members to change the way that they organize their work, manage that work, and measure the results of the work. Agile teams cannot do this on their own; they need help from the entire organization. The changes for all involved are profound, but so are the results when everyone's goals and ways of working are aligned.
What You Will Learn
To succeed in a changing world, organizations need to become more agile, more responsive to customer needs and market changes. This workshop will equip leaders and managers to help their organizations change by providing participants with:
- An overview of what "Agile" is, why organizations need it to survive and thrive in a changing world, how it works, and how to quantify its benefits from a business perspective
- The means to identify the potential opportunities and impacts of Agile in terms of business value
- An understanding of how Agile addresses the root causes of business uncertainty and IT project failure and/or dissatisfied customers
- The ability to compare and contrast Agile practices with alternative business practices and discuss how Agile fosters a culture of innovation and enhances financial performance
- An understanding of how to help form and support agile teams using an empirical approach to product delivery
- An understanding of typical challenges that agile teams face and how to support them by removing impediments
Expected Outcomes After Attending the Workshop
You will have leaders who understand how being agile adds value to their business, and why leadership understanding, sponsorship, and support of Agile practices are essential to successfully becoming more agile as an organization. Leaders will be prepared to support and enable successful teams by providing guidance and removing impediments that are beyond the team's ability to address. This class can be delivered on-site, in a specific organization, to help its leaders understand their important role in transforming their organization or in a public class setting.
Professional Agile Leadership Certification
All participants completing the Professional Agile Leadership - Essentials course will receive a password to attempt the Professional Agile Leadership I (PAL I) certification assessment. If you attempt the PAL I assessment within 14 days and do not score at least 85%, you will be granted a 2nd attempt at no additional cost.
Apart from accessibility reasons of pre-arrangements with the trainer, a condition of ordering live virtual training is it’s mandatory to have camera on and mic on and be clearly in camera view. People can just be themselves, loved ones and pets are welcome. This condition is there to optimize the experience for all attendees and for the trainer. The trainer reserves the right to dismiss, without refund, attendees who refuse to turn on camera and mic without good reason in the view of the trainer. Travelling during training is not permitted. Attendance at live virtual training on a phone screen only is not permitted, as desktop size screens are needed.
Each segment is 60-75 mins long with 15-30 min breaks. Attendees have the choice of spreading the workshop over several days if advertized or if other attendees are ok with that —no recording of the workshop to improve openness. The workshop size is limited to 20 attendees.
Workshop attendees will use Zoom/Teams, Mural, Slack, StoriesOnBoard, Strategyzer, Kanbanize/SwiftKanban, and John's physical flipcharts.
Learning online is almost as effective as face to face. The critical difference is working together online; it takes longer to do things. A "funnel" gets added to the Kanban Board for optional best efforts additions to the official curriculum. Most questions will get answered to the satisfaction of the attendees, one way or the other.
The delivery content is a combination of slides, flip charts, and exercises. The focus is more on flip charts and exercises. The approach is a combination of experiential training and Training From The Back of The Room, regardless of the training course, while sticking to the Scrum.org learning objectives. Many practical problems get discussed. and more often than not, options to solve problems are presented. But some problems need sessions in themselves, and it would be unfair to distract the class if the entire class doesn't want to take that path and/or the trainer is getting concerned that the learning objectives might not be attained within the training course timebox. In addition, some topics could be completely outside the scope of the training class. To that end, some topics may need to be "parked". Some topics could be completely outside the scope of the training class. Best efforts are made to address "parked" topics during the workshop and/or subsequent video conference calls.

Face to face
Classes are usually small, and even if not, John Coleman uses techniques that make a large class run very well, to a limit. John Coleman does not train class sizes over his operational limit so attendees can rightly get the full benefit of his classes.
Teas/coffees/snacks are provided mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Lunch is not provided and attendees have one hour for lunch.
Assessment preparation tends not to be covered in the workshop. The workshop focuses on attendees getting ready to apply new skills back at work immediately after the workshop. There is an expectation that attendees will attend some free post-workshop Zoom calls and watch recordings of their own group (or previous groups) doing tough practice tests, sometimes including John Coleman's own practice tests which address the same learning outcomes, albeit from a different angle. John has an expectation that attendees will attend the calls, as assessment preparation does not scale on a 1:1 basis. Signing up to this workshop is effectively signing up to attend these calls.
Sometimes, John Coleman will have a co-trainer, someone who is already qualified or who is building up experience. Some classes may have an assistant who speaks a local language. Please let John Coleman know in advance if you need him to bring an assistant trainer who speaks your language via email@example.com; economics will hopefully be in our favour to allow that if there is enough demand.

A Scrum Reset is often needed in the workshop
If the class attendees demonstrate additional ability, bonus content may get covered. However, the class pace can get set to a slower pace by even one attendee who has not prepared for class, as per pre-class communications. While John Coleman's style is to assume zero knowledge, some attendees may have negative knowledge, preconceived ideas that are incorrect according to Scrum.org.
Negative knowledge creates drag for a training class, hence John Coleman sometimes performs pre-training-screening-calls. While there are no formal pre-requisites for Scrum.org classes, the trainer may request in pre-training phone calls that some attendees go to Profesional Scrum Foundations/Scrum Master (by any Scrum.org trainer) to ensure a smooth learning experience, even if the booked class ticket needs to be postponed to another date, refunding if necessary less banking fees. Either way at the beginning of each workshop, some kind of Scrum reset takes place to align attendees and reduce the potential for learning drag later.

Location is not 100% confirmed, it is an approximate location. Location cannot be finally booked until final numbers are known. It's unusual for courses to get cancelled. You may cancel up to the specified online ticketing deadline, and if so, depending on the payment engine/approach, the refund could have deductions for bank transfer fees.
You may postpone your ticket with a minimum of three business days notice, thereafter your lack of attendance at the booked date will be treated as a cancellation with zero refund (due to planning & venue costs for class numbers). Best efforts would be made to fit you into a later workshop.
Electronic manuals and Scrum.org assessment fees are included. Physical manuals are usually not provided.
Teas/coffees/water & snacks are included, but special dietary needs may not be addressed by the snacks unless you advise me (hopefully the location can oblige). Neither breakfast nor lunch is included.
